Plain-English role guide

A registered agent is not automatically your mailbox.

A registered agent has a narrow job. A mailbox has a different job. A business office, bank address, and website also have different jobs.

Registered agent

  • Receives service of process and official notices.
  • Must meet the state rule for registered agents.
  • May be listed in company records.
  • Does not automatically receive all business mail.
  • Does not automatically prove you have a real office there.

Mailbox or mail service

  • Receives mail for you.
  • May require USPS Form 1583.
  • May be a CMRA service.
  • May be accepted or rejected by banks and platforms.
  • Does not automatically make the address your principal office.

The question to ask

Do not ask only, "Can I use this address?"

Ask: "Use it for what?"

For state company records?

For legal notices?

For mail?

For a bank account?

For Amazon, Walmart, Stripe, PayPal, or another platform?

For customers to trust a website?

For an EIN, ITIN, or tax workflow?

Direct answer

If a provider says it gives you a registered agent address, that is not the same as saying it gives you a mailbox, bank-safe business address, real office, or U.S. operating presence.

If a provider offers those extra services, read the exact terms for each service.
